Water Heater Repair or Replacements
We have hard water in Hutchinson. Anyone who has ever lived here has at one time thought of the irony of our hard water and our location on top of one of the world’s largest salt mines. So how hard is our water? Here is an excerpt from the Kansas Geohydrology Website.
Hardness of more than 150 parts per million is noticeable by almost everyone, and if it is much higher than 150 parts per million the water may be softened.
The hardness of water samples collected in Reno County ranged from 56 to 9,990 parts per million. Twenty-two [out of 76] of the samples had a hardness of less than 150 parts per million…
To sum up, it’s hard! Really hard!
What does any of this have to do with plumbing or water heaters?
Our hard water causes problems for our water heaters. It’s hard on the workings of them and it causes rust in the tank over time. If a tank develops a hole, it needs to be replaced. In other parts of the country, it’s common for water heaters to last 15 or more years. In Hutchinson, the average is 7-8 years. Sometimes we have seen the occasional 20-year-old water heater, but this is not the normal. Flushing the sediment out of your water heater on an annual basis can prolong the life and is highly recommended to prevent rust. This is a service that we can do for you if you.
Some water heaters can be repaired. If you purchased your water heater from a big box store, then the piece will have to be ordered. Big box stores don’t typically carry water heater replacement parts on hand. You can order these directly from the manufacturer and will have a wait time of 3 days to 2 weeks. However, the part will be free, as long as the unit is still under warranty. The labor for one of our technicians to install it, will not be.
Plumbing parts warehouses stock parts for almost all water heaters that they sell. Parts are also not discontinued very often. With newer water heater models coming out, the parts are often interchangeable so that technicians have easy and fast access to get customers up and going again. If you’ve purchased your water heater from us, you also receive 6 years parts and labor warranty starting in 2017.
We prefer Bradford White water heaters. Why? Bradford White water heaters come standard with a built-in drip pan. When a leak begins to occur, the pan collects the water and snuffs out the pilot light, thus alerting the consumer that there is a problem with the water heater. Most water heaters are stored in an area that isn’t frequented by homeowners. This smart feature can help prevent damage to property and personal belongings.
All water heater prices include the hauling away of the old unit, installation of the new one, new supply hoses, all inspection fees, sales tax, and the only 6 year parts and labor warranty you’ll find.
